Landscape and Ecology is a design focused practice lead by Landscape Architect, Alex Luiten.
We develop and create long term resilient landscape responses that are adaptive to our changing climate.
Landscape and Ecology takes a sensitive approach to the varying ecologies across Aotearoa, through site specific research we capture the landscapes unique narrative across various scales.
We take projects from the initial concept stage right through to design and management, working alongside trusted partners and collaborators
Meet the team
Lily Ortega
Planting Lead, Landscape Designer
Lily is a passionate Landscape Designer with a keen landscape design eye and excellent spatial awareness. She has a talent for curating plant combinations that capture the ethos of a landscape space, through an understanding of the site’s context, culture and ecology.
Lily has always had a passion and interest for plants and gardens. Lily’s curious mind makes her a valuable member of the team as her desire for new botanic and ecological information creates insights into projects. Lily specialises in developing unique planting designs specific to the individual sites ecology while remaining cognisant of the client brief.
Lily’s career experience in finance and customer service brings an integrity and accuracy that has allowed Landscape and Ecology to grow in a sustainable way. Lily completed her Diploma in Landscape Design in 2022, while beginning projects with Landscape and Ecology.

Alexander Luiten
Director, Landscape Architect

Alexander is an experienced Landscape Architect and Designer, having worked extensively throughout Aotearoa New Zealand on projects encompassing the landscape, ecological, and creative fields.
After graduating from Elam school of Fine arts in 2011, Alex spent three years working for Suzanne Turley Landscapes on all aspects of high-end residential design as well as developing an artist practice that saw exhibitions in Auckland and Hamilton.
In 2016 Alex started Landscape and Ecology Ltd. A research studio focused on bridging the gap between an ecological understanding and landscape architecture and design. Significant projects Alex has been involved in include large scale wetland remediation, management and design and sensitive land development in Northland in collaboration with DOC and NRC.
Alex's role involves assessment and research surrounding the ecological potential of numerous projects, including building in a more complex and thorough understanding of ecological principles and how they can be interwoven throughout the design process, that is sensitive to the bioregion of the project.
