Permeable Productive Paradise

_

A concrete driveway transformed into a fully permeable, useable space possessing the ability to function as a flexible space for a young family.

Passers-by of this Avondale home will find it hard to resist the urge of peeking into this beautifully renewed outdoor space - their curious eyes helped by the welcoming social fencing along the streets-edge, enhancing the home's connection to the surrounding community.

Working alongside architect and homeowner, Fritha Hobbs, a light-touch approach was adopted to create a functional and warm family space that was developed from the designs' core principles of permeability and productivity.

A hogin path greets visitors to the backyard, snaking its way between the textural, flourishing garden and lawn on its opposing edges. The path comes to an end, butting up against stairs that lead up to a generous terraced deck.

The deck extends itself from the dwellings' interior living space - providing an essential link between the home and garden, as well as a space to entertain or simply enjoy the sun.

A productive vegetable garden sits off the edge of the deck, filled with a bounty of produce ready for dinner-time picking year-round - if young Edith doesn't get to it first!

A family haven for years to come, the project lends its success to a natural collaboration with homeowners Fritha and Reuben; creating an end product that has shaped up to be both resilient and comfortable for the family it serves.
